I had the exceptional opportunity to attend The Gaja Experience hosted by Chateau Cellars, where we were guided through a captivating tasting led by Giovanni Gaja himself — a fifth-generation winemaker and current steward of the legendary GAJA Winery in Piedmont, Italy.

The evening offered an insightful journey into the GAJA estate’s history, philosophy, and winemaking excellence, spanning both Barbaresco and Barolo DOCG regions. The wines were elegant, expressive, and deeply rooted in place and tradition. Below are my personal tasting notes and ratings:

2020 Gaja Barbaresco Sori San Lorenzo
Tasting Notes: Dark cherry, red and dark berries, currant. More tannin and structure. Aromas of tobacco and pine.
Texture: Velvety, smooth, dry, and full-bodied.
Overall Impression: Beautifully structured with notes of oak and fall leaves.
My Rating: 97 pts

2021 Gaja Barbaresco
Tasting Notes: Dark cherry, cedar, and licorice. Earthy with notes of leather and vanilla.
Texture: Silky with fine tannins, full-bodied and balanced.
Pairing Suggestion: Pecorino gnocchi with garlic and herbs.
My Rating: 96 pts

2020 Gaja Barbaresco Costa Russi
Tasting Notes: Cherry, leather, red berries, raspberry, and strawberry. Dry, acidic, and floral with cedar tones.

My Rating: 94 pts

2022 Gaja Gaia & Rey Chardonnay
Tasting Notes: Salty, mineral, citrus, and lemon grass.

2020 Gaja Barolo Sperss
Tasting Notes: Cherry, raspberry, strawberry, red and dark fruit, orange peel, and blackberry.
Character: Powerful yet elegant. Balanced acidity, with brown spice and a medium+ body.
Overall Impression: Youthful now, but destined to develop into a complex masterpiece.
My Rating: 95 pts
